Amidst the heartbreak wrought by the Los Angeles wildfires, Gabba Gallery invites our community to find strength together through the healing power of art. We are kicking off 2025 with three spectacular new solo exhibitions by Brooke Harker, Patrick Haemmerlein, and Judy Ostro. Curated by Jason Ostro and Elena Jacobson, all three shows open Saturday, January 25.
Brooke Harker’s TIMESCAPES is a joyful collection of cityscapes that will make you feel like you are on a trip around the world. Using vibrant color palettes of thickly textured oils on canvas, Harker captures the unique vitality of some of the world’s most beloved destinations. Immerse yourself in the streets of Hong Kong, the taxis of New York City, the cliffs of Cinque Terre, the beaches of Southern California and more. Escape with TIMESCAPES.
Patrick Haemmerlein celebrates the gritty beauty of Los Angeles through SHARED NARRATIVE, his newest collection of mixed media works on panel. Haunting scenes of urban decay feature brightly-colored graffiti adorning desolate corners of the city: a tower of shipping containers, a tanker train car, DTLA’s infamous graffiti towers. Although the people seem to have vanished, hints of wildlife remain. A lone coyote or sometimes a deer or a bird lingers, staring back at the viewer, challenging you to reconsider the built environment and your place in it.
Judy Ostro returns to Gabba Gallery with SUNSHINE DAYDREAM, an exuberant collection of candy-colored abstract paintings. Geometric fields of rainbow buzz alongside energetic squares of blue and red and yellow. Ostro’s work teems with joy and vitality, enticing the viewer to break free from the mundane and take flight with delight.
The opening night reception for all three shows takes place Saturday, January 25, 5-9pm. The event is free and open to the public; no RSVP necessary. Sponsored by Liquid Death and Easy RIder. DJ Jonathan Williams spinning.
Gabba Gallery is located at 235 S. Broadway. Pay parking lots are located on either side of the gallery. Rates vary. A Metro station (Historic Broadway) is a across the street.
All three shows will be on view through February 15. After opening night, gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday, noon to 3pm or by appointment.
