JACK WINTHROP | CHRISTINA RAMOS| JUDY OSTRO

Gabba Gallery invites you to three outstanding new solo shows by three Los Angeles-based artists: Jack Winthrop, Christina Ramos, and Judy Ostro. Curated by Jason Ostro and Elena Jacobson, all three shows open October 9.

Jack Winthrop explodes onto the art scene with his first ever solo exhibition, The Wounded Healer, a powerful collection of large-scale paintings on canvas. Abstracted human forms, flowers, symbols, and text dance amidst kinetic webs of bold, graffiti-like lines. Inspired by his personal journey through addiction and recovery, Winthrop’s paintings capture the chaos of suffering as well as the hopeful struggle of healing. Don’t miss this stunning and evocative debut.

Christina Ramos returns to Gabba with Child’s Play, a whimsical collection of recent work. Ramos captures the spirit of youth in her paintings of kids and kids-at-heart. A little girl and a gorilla play together with a barrel of monkeys. A young woman with pink balloons tied to her hair hosts a tea party. A tattooed hipster lounges on Twister mat. As always, Ramos wows viewers with her masterful use of acrylics, leaving many shocked that the perfectly blended paints are not in fact oil.

After decades making art in Detroit, Judy Ostro celebrates her recent move to Los Angeles with a cheerful solo exhibition, Never Too Late. Candy colors and geometric patterns take center stage in this lively collection of abstract paintings. Ostro’s psychedelic canvases and skate decks seem to buzz with positive energy. In several works, she takes this sense of movement to the next level by weaving strips of two paintings together into one. In these trying times, Ostro’s sunshine vibes provide the perfect pick-me-up.

H is for Honey - Essi Zimm

Essi Zimm’s highly anticipated solo exhibition H is for Honey opens June 5 at Gabba Gallery. The show was originally scheduled to open in March 2020 but was postponed due to the pandemic. It was painful to keep these gorgeous mixed-media works hidden for over a year, but we felt it was essential to wait until it was safe to show them in person. Zimm’s vibrant colors and luscious layers of collage are just so incredible to behold up close. Definitely worth the wait!

Jules Muck - LET THE CATS OUT

Gabba Gallery presents Let the Cats Out, a virtual solo exhibition by Jules Muck. Curated by Jason Ostro and Elena Jacobson, the show will be available for online viewing at GabbaGallery.com beginning Thursday, September 17 at 11am PT (2pm ET).

Jules Muck’s Let the Cats Out, will make you laugh and it might make you squirm a little too—and that’s just fine by Muck. As a prolific street artist based in Venice, California, Muck has earned a loyal following and sparked plenty of controversy with her playfully irreverent murals. She channels that same edgy energy into this latest collection of paintings on canvas.

Muck reimagines pop culture icons in hilariously unexpected ways. “Darth Lennon” depicts John Lennon casually smoking while wearing his iconic New York City t-shirt and a Darth Vader helmet. Muck celebrates Ruth Bader Ginsburg with “RBG 4 EVA” in which the Supreme Court justice rocks a face covered with tattoos. “LA Nights” shows Kermit and Animal going for a joy ride in KITT, the car from Knight Rider. In “Kisstens,” four fluffy white kittens pay tribute to 80s rock band Kiss, sporting the band’s signature black and white makeup. The fun continues with Big Bird, Miss Piggy, Yoda, a donut-loving unicorn and much more.

In these stressful times, Muck’s cheeky sense of humor provides the perfect escape. Let loose with Let the Cats Out.

Additionally, the show includes several of Russell’s “portals,” three-dimensional works with round, window-like frames. Each charming portal transports the viewer to a new dimension, a delightful mini-world where things seem new yet also somehow familiar.

CANTSTOPGOODBOY x Star Trek clothing collection

February 2020

CANTSTOPGOODBOY returns for his fourth solo show at Gabba Gallery, this time exploring The Language of Flowers. In this jubilant collection of floral works, the artist refreshes the timeless Still Life genre with his signature pop aesthetic. Vibrant color palettes, playful lines, and rich layering techniques converge in each stunning canvas. We invite you to join in the discourse, and converse in the language of flowers.

Lucas Raynaud returns to Gabba with Entitled, a playful library of framed vintage books embossed with hilarious and unexpected titles. While the books appear faded and old, the humorous titles seared into their covers poke fun at issues that are decidedly “now.”  Raynaud’s writing is sharp and clever, taking aim at everyone from Internet Influencers to Baby Boomers. Entiteld is sure to amuse viewers with its spirited, satirical, and poignant commentary on modern society.

For her first solo show at Gabba, Long Beach artist Nichole McDaniel sets her sights on the skies with Daydreaming. Cloud formations drift across celestial color fields in these soothing and inspiring works. Join us for Daydreaming, and find yourself with your head in the clouds.

Shlome J. Hayun celebrates the tools of the artist’s trade in Painting Homage, his first solo show at Gabba Gallery. Spray cans are suspended mid-spray, frozen paint brushes seem guided by invisible hands, all atop brightly colored abstract backgrounds. When looking at a finished art piece the tools and materials used to create it are often forgotten, but Hayun turns them into the art itself, urging the viewer to pay homage.

January 2020

Los Angeles artist Patrick Haemmerlein’s favorite muse has always been the City of Angeles itself. In his latest solo exhibition, Ancestral Memories, he focuses his exploration on LA’s grittier corners. Alleyways, shipping containers, cranes, graffiti, and train tracks appear frequently in this collection, as does his signature “urban coyote.” Sheet music for a different classic song is featured in each mixed media piece. Each song title, such as “Castles Made of Sand”or “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” offers a different lens through which to view the work or the city.

Newcomer Bobby Moore explodes onto the LA art scene with an outstanding debut solo exhibition, Who Goes There. His paintings buzz with movement as objects, body parts, and abstract elements swirl together in delightfully unexpected ways. Tobacco pipes and daisies revolve like a pinwheel around a coyote skull. A birdhouse wearing sneakers lunges toward the viewer. The kinetic tableaus are both whimsical and hypnotic. Prepare to be mesmerized.

Los Angeles artist Allison Bamcat admits that she is “color-obsessed” and her latest solo show New Neighbors is living proof. Using gouache in a bold palette (hot pink, deep magenta, electric lime, and vivid violet) the artist paints fantastical flora and fauna. Her delicious combinations of tropical colors feel very modern and the show radiates positive energy. Try not to smile at this Color Party—we dare you!

Isaac Pelayo’s BIRDS&BEES is an unabashed celebration of lust. Luscious nude women, realistically rendered in oils entice the viewer from every panel. Pelayo plays with contradiction by sprinkling these otherwise classical nudes with incongruously cartoonish elements like birds, bees, and daisies. The result harmoniously combines the past and the present, and also functions as a reflection of early understandings of nudity, sex, and the discussion as one comes of age—as some call “the birds and the bees.”

December 2019

November 2019

Gabba Gallery is excited to present our 7th annual affordable art show, Wishlist 7!  This upbeat and lively show will feature over 60 local and international artists with unmatched deals on their work.  Prices start at $50 and never exceed $1000.  This is also the only show at Gabba that is “cash & carry.” As soon as a piece of art is sold, it is taken off the wall for the buyer to take home,  and the curators replace it with something new! This creates an electric atmosphere where the show continuously evolves. Don’t miss this once-a-year chance to find stunning art at unbeatable prices. Curated by Jason Ostro and Elena Jacobson

October 2019

Joey Feldman returns to Gabba with a solo show titled Gallimaufry, a word which means “a confused jumble or medley of things.”  Feldman’s collection radiates energy. Dynamic lines, expressive shapes, vibrant colors, and abstracted characters converge with compelling intensity.  Highly collected and coveted for his evocative style of painting and drawing, Feldman has shown at Gabba since 2014 and was also one of three artists Gabba exhibited at LA Art Show earlier this year.

Emek presents Picture Day, a series of delightful ink drawings of creepy yet lovable monsters dressed up for an imaginary school portrait.  Each creature puts his best claw, tentacle, or antenna forward for these once-in-a-lifetime headshots, drawn from the mind of one of today’s most prolific gig-poster artists.  Emek will also be showing prints and sculpture. His work has been featured on PBS, permanently displayed at Hard Rock Cafés, and holds three spots on Billboard’s list of the 25 Best Rock Posters of All Time—more than any other artist on the list. Emek lives and works in Oregon.

Luke Martin impresses with his debut solo show,  22, a title celebrating his bright young age. Despite his relative youth, Martin’s talent and drive have already catapulted him into the national spotlight. He has created official artwork for many high profile acts including Childish Gambino, Phish, Eddie Vedder, and Jimmy Page. His show at Gabba includes original fine line drawings using pen and ink. His subject matter ranges from the architectural (Sydney Opera House) to the humorous (Donald Glover dodging dragons in the streets of London). Everything is drawn delicately and in staggering detail, captivating the viewer. Martin lives and works in Baltimore, Maryland.

Gabba also welcomes Zeb Love for his first solo show, The Drift of Things.  Love has created gig-posters for The National, Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters and many more. His  artwork depicts charming and whimsical scenes: a farm girl dreaming of city life while surrounded by  a menagerie of animals; a skeleton reading a book. Each feels like a passing, split-second, daydream imagining “What if...”  Zeb has worked with various media, including graphic design, but in 2012 his path changed with his first gig-poster. He now focuses on illustration and screen printing. He is based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

M. Christy
Warren Jacobson
Hope Kroll
Nicole Bruckman

In Friends, his third solo show at Gabba, M. Christy departs from candy colors and returns to his original love of putting ink to paper. Christy’s illustrations address problematic environmental issues, weaving in mythos, superheroes, and cryptozoological characters working against the environmental decay.

Warren Jacobson of Bayville, NY makes his West Coast solo debut with Homeland, a collection of mixed media panels depicting quiet corners of the American landscape. Using photography, paint and sometimes collage, the artist captures serene scenes: the beach before a storm, a yellow bicycle, an empty parking lot, a weathered welcome mat. Each image feels warm and familiar, inviting the viewer to linger a little longer as if to uncover a forgotten memory.

Hope Kroll presents For the Birds, a spectacular collection of collages made from intricate clippings from antique books and vintage photographs. Delicate illustrations of flowers, people, and objects are stacked and woven into textured layers that exceed the two-dimensional plane. While the aged paper, colors, and images take us back in time, the artist reconstructs them in decidedly fresh and modern ways. The results are stunning and not to be missed.

A Consortium of Canines by Cleveland-based artist Nicole Bruckman is a delightful exhibition of paintings featuring adorable dogsInspired by her relationship with her own rescued pit bulls, the artist carefully captures each pup’s distinct personality.  The dogs appear in whimsical scenarios: wearing cute hats, tangled in rope lights, or stacked on top of one another. Prepare to fall in love with Bruckman’s dogs or perhaps even adopt one—no walking required.

MORLEY
NAGISA KAMAE
ISKAR
JEREMY NOVY

Gabba Gallery proudly presents four evocative and exciting solo exhibitions by artists Morley, Nagisa Kamae, Iskar, and Jeremy Novy. Curated by Jason Ostro and Elena Jacobson.

Morley returns to Gabba with a fresh new collection of text art, In All Things Aspire Madly, which channels his street art style onto the gallery walls. Like his work on the streets, these new original works feature poignant phrases, expressive paint gestures and, at times, his cheeky self-portrait. Morley’s words are often funny, sometimes gut wrenching, but always endearing and honest.

All the way from Japan we bring you the adorable and heart-warming works of Nagisa Kamae in her solo show Sharing is Caring. Painted in a photo-realistic style atop candy colored backgrounds, her artwork features a menagerie of animals interacting with delicious foods—a  baby elephant lounges atop a syrupy stack of pancakes while a sleeping baby seal snuggles with a bag of Cheetoes. Art doesn’t get much cuter than this!

Iskar returns from Mexico City with his latest solo show, Sanctuary. Originally featured at last year’s Borderless: Latin America, Iskar delivers a vibrant new collection of original works.  Lose yourself in his intricate ink drawings, splashes of tropical color, and imagery inspired by nature, the artist’s childhood, and the musings of his young daughter.

Beloved and renowned San Francisco street artist Jeremy Novy delivers A Queer Examination, a collection of works focused on LGBTQ themes and imagery. With this collection, Novy aims to empower and uplift the human spirit of the queer community and reinforce its visibility and impact in the art world.

February 2019

ANYES GALLEANI
KATE CARVELLAS
PATRICK HAEMMERLEIN
HENRY NILLER

Anyes Galleani celebrates the intersection of fierce and feminine with Strong, a striking new collection of mixed media works depicting beautiful women. Abstracted female forms move the viewer alongside refreshing portraits of female icons of past and present (Marilyn Monroe, Amy Winehouse, Angelina Jolie). Using photo montage, paste, paint, and other media, Galleani highlights the complexity of our modern notion of woman: simple yet layered; soft yet bold; delicate yet strong.

In her upcoming exhibition, Time, Space, and Place, artist Kate Carvellas challenges the viewer to see ordinary objects as extraordinary. Her assemblage approach incorporates vintage items collected from thrift stores and flea markets. Carvellas deliberately avoids randomness, being intentional with her compositions and sometimes taking weeks to find the “right thing” to be placed.   When discussing her work, Carvellas refers to a quote by philosopher Edward Casey: “Time and space come together in place, resulting in change that celebrates or disrupts cyclical time and leads to rituals that recreate the universe.”

Patrick Haemmerlein continues to delight viewers with Measuring Memories, his second solo exhibition at Gabba. His unmistakable mixed media panels juxtapose evocative, watercolor images of California (a surfer cutting back on a wave or a coyote thriving mid-city) with monochromatic collages of sheet music and other literature. At times in this show Haemmerlein also diverges from this signature style with works that explore Native American symbols as they relate to photographs of animals.

Henry Niller presents Anomalies, an exhibition of work spanning two years and a wide range of styles. A large collection of drawings in pen and ink on paper showcase the arc of Niller’s recent development as an artist. Several larger, more detailed mixed media works build upon concepts and approaches explored in these drawings. Niller also shares a comprehensive collection of his beloved “Rockers” series in which he cheekily re-imagines legendary artists and bands (Kiss, the Ramones, Phish) as delightful and lovable skeletons printed atop vibrant backgrounds.

January 2019

PHOTO LA

Gabba Gallery represents fine art photographer Jeffrey Sklan at Photo LA, booth B-08. Sklan’s powerful new botanical show, Elegy, pays tribute to the victims of recent acts of terrorism and violence. Each image captures the striking beauty of a different calla lily and is dedicated to the innocent people who lost their lives in an attack. Sklan began the series with A Lily for Orlando, a photograph honoring the 49 people murdered in the Pulse nightclub shooting, then added to the series as additional attacks took place across the globe. The exhibition is both beautiful and devastating as it memorializes the victims of these atrocious acts of violence that continue to occur with alarming frequency.

NINA PALOMBA | STEPHEN LEVEY | JENNIFER VERGE | PASTEY WHYTE

Nina Palomba entices us with Nini’s Weenies--a tasty combination of Japanese Pop Culture and Americana. Combining street style photography and Pop Art, this solo exhibition by Nina Palomba is one to dig into and enjoy to the last colorful bite. Fast cars, pin-up girls and of course the hot dog, these deep roots of American tradition and lifestyle have inspired people across the globe. Nina traveled to Tokyo to create, work and develop an immersive experience that combines popular American cartoon icons with a touch of Japanese flair. This fresh perspective on pop culture and the effects of American nostalgia showcases a new side of Nina’s work and a perspective of Japanese culture that will make you feel right at home.

A 4th generation Angeleno, Stephen Levey has undoubtedly developed an eye for the beauty the City of Angels has to offer, and it shows in his solo show titled After.  Strictly using an iPhone, Levey pushes the boundaries of what’s expected from a phone camera, and has even gained attention from the Apple team for his work.  Dazzling black and white photographs narrate the story of a desolate, romanticized LA, over to the decaying vehicles left in desert on the outskirts.  See outstanding popular landmarks, as well as delicate details easily missed.  Visit the show and you’ll see the world a little differently, After.

Get out of your comfort zone with Jennifer Verge’s solo show titled Naked Truth.  Verge is a Canadian born visual artist with a distinct urban industrial pop art style that incorporates mixed media, assemblage, and powerful messages.  With a love for using power tools, she came into her style incorporating found and recycled objects into her work, giving it a rustic yet nuanced appeal.  Making use of uplifting text, it’s apparent that the artist sees the world with a bright side, and even states that she is inspired by people who “really live the hell out of life” and aims to transfer that call to adventure to her viewers through her work.

Pastey Whyte takes us on a journey in his solo exhibit titled “Hand Painted Pop” – a title borrowed from a traveling MOCA exhibit of the from the early 90’s featuring artists such as Warhol, Lichtenstein, Twombly, Johns, and Rauschenberg.  Pastey was living in Chicago at the time, and felt called to develop his own voice of “hand painted” imagery. Pulling media and content from museum pamphlets, ticket stubs, vintage ads and social imagery of men and women, down to drawings and writings from his daughter, Pastey Whyte pulls together a personal yet universally relatable narrative about what it means to be an American, living in America, at this point in time.
